Group GSA - Bank of China, Sussex Street

When Bank of China chose to expand their Sydney operations across three additional floors of their Sussex Street headquarters, the brief was clear – deliver the same uncompromising standard that had defined their 2018 fitout, and do so within a workplace environment that would meet the expectations of one of the world’s most significant financial institutions. Designed by Group GSA and delivered by Renascent, the 2,700 square metre expansion is a study in considered restraint; a workplace interior where quality of material speaks more eloquently than volume of gesture.

At the heart of that material story is Briggs Veneers’ American Walnut, quarter cut and joined in a deliberate random mismatch – a specification chosen as much for its practical intelligence as its visual richness. American Walnut is one of the great classic timbers of interior architecture: deeply grained, luxuriously dark, and possessed of a warmth and gravitas that few other species can match. Its association with boardrooms, libraries, and spaces of quiet authority is long-established, and in a project of this institutional significance, that heritage feels entirely earned.

The quarter cut draws the fine, straight grain of the Walnut to its most refined expression; consistent, linear, and deeply sophisticated. The random mismatch join, meanwhile, was a considered technical decision as much as an aesthetic one. Across a fitout of this scale, spanning multiple floors and thousands of square metres of joinery, achieving seamless visual coverage requires the blending of multiple flitch bundles; each one slightly different in tone and figure from the last. The random mismatch embraces that natural variation rather than fighting it, allowing the grain to flow across large surfaces in a continuous, organic movement that reads as effortless cohesion. No repetition, no visible seam…just the quiet, steady presence of one of the world’s most timeless timbers, at its very best.

The result is a workplace that carries the authority its occupants expect; refined, enduring, and built to last well beyond the life of any trend.
